Myanmar, the former Burma, is one of the world’s most desired and magical destinations. Come on our  small group tour to experience the best of this exotic country largely untouched by Western influence. Traveling with us in Myanmar today offers you a unique opportunity for experiential travel to land recently opened to Western travelers.

We will  travel in January when the weather is perfect and local festivals abound. Highlights include attending a New Year’s celebration of the Kayin Tribe; photographing the world’s longest teak bridge in Mandalay; strolling the markets and galleries in Yangon and boating on the azure blue waters of Inle Lake; eating the best of sumptuous Burmese cuisine and learning to cook like a local in the cooking class we offer.

 

Detailed Itinerary

Day One. Yangon.

Yangon Shwedagon Temple Tourist BdAfter your transfer from the Yangon airport to our hotel, we’ll begin our tour with a visit to Shwedagon Pagoda, the most revered of Buddhist sites in Myanmar. From there, we’ll visit view the colonial architecture of downtown Yangon and enjoy our Welcome Dinner.

Day Two. Yangon to Hpa An

TaunggyiFireBalloon FestivalThis morning we’ll drive in our private mini-van to southern Myanmar to Hpa An, which is the center of the Kayin New Year’s celebration. Along the way we will visit thermal hot springs and caves housing Buddhist relics.

Day Three. Hpa AnStilit house

We will spend the day exploring the holiday markets and photographing the Kayin traditional dances around the fire camp. In the evening we will stroll in the Festival Night Bazaar, a colorful ethnic market of foods and fabrics.

Day Four. Hpa An to Mawlamyine

Inle Lake Fisherman Rowing with LegToday will board our private boat and sail 4 hours down the Thanlwin River to Mawlamyine,  which is the 4th largest city in Myanmar and the gateway to the southern part of the country. Seldom visited by tourists, we will explore the traditional markets and photograph the river boats docked close to the city center.

Day Five. Mawlamyine

Judi Cooking ClassWe will take a ferry to cross the river to visit Balu also called Ogre Island. This large scenic island is home to 70 villages and many craftspeople. On the island we will travel by traditional transport to experience a traditional Burma lifestyle not found in urban areas. Late in the afternoon, we return for our last night in Mawlamyine.

Day Six. Mawlamyine to Yangon to Inle Lake.

Myanmar Travel by River BoatThis morning we’ will depart Mawlamyine in our private van to drive (6.5 hrs) back to Yangon where we will have lunch at the Green Elephant Restaurant which is located close to the Yangon Airport. Following lunch we will board our flight to Heho (1 hr). We will travel from the Heho Airport by private van to Nyaung Shwe, the town which is the gateway to Inle Lake. After strolling in the town, we will board our boats which will carry us to our lakeside resort.

Day Seven.  Inle Lake.

This morning we will explore the vast Inle Lake by private boat, visiting vast hydroponic tomato farms, villages on stilts in the middle of the lake and a five day market which rotates between different villages each day. The market is a wonderful opportunity to photograph the pageant of ethnic people shopping in a colorful typical market.

Day Eight. Inle Lake.

inle-lake-5-day-marketToday we will visit Indein, an Innthar Village on the edge of Inle Lake. It is the home to 1000 ancient pagodas and stupas on a hill overlooking the lake. We will stroll through this village to capture images of a traditional way of life  of the Innthar people.

Day Nine. Inle Lake – Samkar Day Trip

Hot Air Balloons over Bagan

Today we will take a 2 hour scenic  journey in our private boat to explore the southern part of Inle Lake, which is off the beaten path and offers us a view of a traditional style of life of Pa O hill tribes which abound in this area. This area of the lake with its ancient stupas, some in the water, is unique and offers many stunning photo opportunities.

Day Ten. Inle Lake – Nyaung Shwe – Heho – Bagan

Following breakfast we will boat back to Nyaung Shwe where we will have our cooking class at the Bamboo Delight Cooking School. This wonderful experience will introduce you in how to make delicious Burmese dishes in a setting overlooking the mountains surrounding Inle Lake. We will feast on the foods we make before boarding our van to take us back to the Heho Airport for our flight to Bagan.

Day Eleven. Bagan.

Bagan, once the capital and economic center of the Pagan empire, is where over 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas, and monasteries were built between the 11th and 13th centuries. Today there are over 2,400 temples and stupas in the vast area of Bagan. In the morning, we’ll explore by horse cart important temples in the archeological zone of Bagan. In the afternoon there will be free time for you to wander and photograph on your own, either by bicycle, horse cart or on foot. We will gather in the late afternoon and go to one one of the temples to capture the stunning sunset over Bagan.

Day Twelve. Bagan.

Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner Today we will visit traditional villages in the Bagan area: Sat-Sat-Yo village where the boys at the age of eleven wear the Sat-Yit-Wine hair style; Salay to explore the Yoke Sone monastery and the Shin-Pin-Sar-Kyo with its famous mural paintings. On our return to Bagan we will visit other villages, arriving in time for more sunset views of the temple complex of Bagan.

Day Thirteen. Bagan.

For those going on the sunrise balloon ride, it will be an early morning start to glide up and over the ancient temples – capturing some spectacular photographs. Later we’ll tour several temples and have free time in the afternoon. To end the day, we’ll have dinner and attend a dance performance.

Day Fourteen Bagan – Yangon.

We catch a morning flight back to Yangon in order to visit Scott Market, also called the Bogyoke Aung San Market, where vendors sell fabrics, parasols, jewelry and much more. In the late afternoon, we will visit the harbor to observe and photograph locals catching the river ferries or praying at the Botahtaung Pagoda.  We will dine together and enjoy a Farewell dinner to  mark the end of the tour.

Day Fifteen. Yangon. Tour Ends

Following breakfast, you’ll be driven to the airport for your departing flight. Safe Travels!
